GRAMMAR OF EXTENSION
Prudencio Irazábal

From December 18, 2020 to March 10, 2021

Everything in painting is a projection of the body's experience...

This series of works, which began in 2020, proposes a dialogue seeking in the body the affinity of a surface capable of being perceived as an extensive intimacy and being explored from side to side with the broad gestures of painting. What does a surface that we cannot see or touch feel like? It is only through a hug that we are able to reach the back.

Shaped by sheets of muscles that cross and overlap in all directions, the back reveals its underlying structure through small elevations under which the body's non-voluntary movements breath and beat. Its surface's integrity and continuity with the thin layers of the painting's colour fields give an account of the parallel presence of the viewer in front of the painting.

The well-known Rückenfigur of the romantic landscape –now deprived of a place from which to contemplate the world– has begun to walk backwards, getting close to the spectator's position and presenting itself as the entire stage.
