Pelaires

Historia

Josep Pinya i Bonnin founded in 1969 the Sala Pelaires. In doing so, he was creating the first gallery dedicated to contemporary art in Palma de Mallorca.
Since then, he has been carrying out an unprecedented task, that is, the hard promotion of art in Mallorca. Well-known artists, both national and international, have put their works on show in the Sala Pelaires: Miró, Tàpies, Saura, Calder, Motherwell, Moore, Chillida, Brossa, Millares, Manolo Valdés, and Hernández Pijuán amongst others.

In 1972, the North American artist Alexander Calder exhibited for the first time in Spain. As a result of this exhibition and thanks to the connection of Joan Miró, Calder gave the city of Palma a sculpture (stable-Mobile), which he named “Nancy”, located today in S'Hort del Rei.
In the 80's a new group of artists, such as Ramón Canet, María Carbonero, Menéndez Rojas, Antoni Socias, Campano, Sicilia... also started to show their works in this gallery.

Writers, poets, critics, as well-known as Camilo José Cela, Vargas Llosa, Alexandre Cirici Pellicer, Julio Cebrián, Gabriel Janer Manila, Calvo Serraller, Miguel Fernández Cid, Enrique Juncosa, Fernando Huici, Baltasar Porcel, Caballero Bonal, Vicente Alexandre, Miguel Angel Asturias, Pablo Neruda, Josep Meliá, Rafael Alberti, Blai Bonet, etc, also collaborated in the catalogues.
Since 1982, the Sala Pelaires has taken part in different art exhibitions and fairs, Arco, Art Frankfurt, Art Miami, Art Chicago, Art Cologne, Art Expo (Tokio), ArtAsia (Hong Kong), Hartísima (Turín ), are some of them, promoting Spanish art in foreign countries. To continue doing so, the Sala Pelaires has kept a wide and constant contact / cooperation with galleries outside Spain.

In 1990, the Sala Pelaires began to restore the Convet of the Trinitarias, the old Palace of Can Veri, built in 1625, turning it into the best private cultural centre on the island, as well as a reference point for the whole country.
His Majesty, King Juan Carlos I inaugurated this Centre in 1990. Famous artists belonging to the present world of art, Miquel Navarro, Juan Muñoz, Chillida, Tàpies, Miró, Jason Martin, Mark Francis, Rachel Howard, Domenico Bianchi, Mimmo Palladino, Rebecca Horn, amongst others, have prepared their exhibitions under Frederic Pinya's management.

Nowadays, the Pelaires Contemporary Cultural Centre is open to all types of cultural activities, such as conferences and lectures, book presentations, concerts, debates... amongst many others.
